Introduction
The Receiver Calls Rondo in its full form requires six players, a 10m × 10m grid, bibs, a stack of spare balls, and a space that can run three-minute rounds with recovery. The communication loop it trains — receiver calls before ball-carrier plays; ball-carrier waits and listens — does not require any of those things. The loop is a two-person act. It can be trained with two people, a ball, and ten metres of space.
The Pair Call formalises this. Two players face each other 10m apart. One has the ball and waits. The other calls a direction. The ball-carrier hears the call and plays to it. Roles alternate. No defender, no clock, no competing calls. Just the loop, practised to depth.
Where the full Rondo trains the communication habit in the context of pressure, spatial complexity, and competing calls, the Pair Call trains the loop itself — in isolation, in silence, with maximum feedback clarity. A clean call that produces a ball exactly where it was called feels unmistakably right to both players. That precise feedback is what makes daily repetition compound.
The Pair Call is recommended as the daily warm-up before any ball session. Five to eight minutes, and the call-and-listen rhythm is already running before the main work begins.

- Distance: 10m between players (baseline). Compress to 6m in a small garden, or expand to 15m for 13–16 players who want more time pressure on the call timing.
- No grid needed. Two players standing on a line, 10m apart, on any flat surface.
- No cones, no bibs, no spare balls. The Pair Call is designed to have zero setup friction — arrive, stand 10m apart, begin.
- Ball starts with Player A. After every 5 passes, roles swap: Player A becomes the caller, Player B becomes the ball-carrier. Three or four swaps per session at Levels 1–3.
Description
The one rule: Player B calls a direction before Player A plays. Player A waits to hear the call, then plays to it.
One rep cycle:
- Player A holds the ball. They stand 10m from Player B, facing them, and do not begin any pass motion.
- Player B scans their own position — where are they relative to Player A? What kind of pass could they usefully call for?
- Player B calls — "Here!" (ground pass to current position), "Switch!" (play it to my other side), "Away!" (through-ball into space in front of me). The call must be clear and loud enough to be heard across 10m.
- Player A hears the call and plays to the called direction, with weight and placement matching what the call asked for.
- Player B receives with a directional first touch matching the call — if they called "Switch," they take their first touch across the body to the called side.
- Roles continue — Player B is now the ball-carrier; Player A is now the caller. The same one rule applies.
- After 5 passes: players swap caller/listener roles explicitly. Continue for 3–4 swaps.
No back-pass variation: at Level 2+, add the rule that the receiver may not immediately return the ball on the very next call. This forces a touch, then a call, before play.
Call vocabulary (scaffolded): Levels 1–2 use three words — "Here!", "Switch!", "Away!" By Level 3, players typically develop personal vocabulary specific to their partnership. Consistent vocabulary within the pair matters more than standardised vocabulary across pairs.
Progressions
Level 1 (baseline — direction call only, 10m, static): as described. Player B calls one of three words ("Here!", "Switch!", "Away!") before Player A plays. Player A waits, hears, plays; Player B takes a directional first touch. After 5 passes, swap roles. No foot call, no movement, no back-pass rule yet. Mastery signal: the call arrives before Player A's pass motion begins in 80%+ of reps across one session, and both players can articulate what the three call words mean without hesitation.
Level 2 (foot call added): same structure. Player B's call now includes the receiving foot: "Here, left!" / "Switch, right!" / "Away, strong!". Player B pre-commits the receiving surface with the call; their first touch must use the declared foot. This introduces both-feet receiving as a communication act. Mastery signal: foot call appearing in 60%+ of calls; first-touch foot matching the call in 80%+ of reps.
Level 3 (expanded distance + precision demand): extend the distance to 15m. The longer pass means more flight time — which gives the caller more time to commit to a specific call before the ball arrives, but also makes a vague call ("Here!") less useful over the longer distance. Call quality naturally becomes more specific. Mastery signal: specific directional + foot calls at 15m with consistent first-touch matching.
Level 4 (movement call — Player B moves before calling): Player B takes 3–5 lateral steps before calling — "Away!" as they start a run, or "Switch!" as they shift position. Player A must read both the call and the body movement to place the pass correctly; a "Switch!" call while moving right tells Player A to play to the right side. This begins approximating the match dynamic where a receiver calls as they are already moving. Mastery signal: Player A consistently playing to the correct side of Player B's movement, not to the position Player B started from.
Level 5 (both players in motion — walking circuit): both players walk slowly in opposing directions on a 15m corridor. Neither stops; both are always moving. Player A calls when they want the ball; Player B waits to hear the call, turns their body toward the called destination, and plays. The most complex version — two moving players, calls mid-movement, first touch in a direction the body must rotate to reach. Mastery signal: call and response maintained with 70%+ call compliance over a 3-minute continuous circuit.
Coach guidance
(The Pair Call is designed to run without a coach at Levels 1 and 2 — self-directed by the two players. These notes apply when a coach observes, or when a player uses the Pair Call for the first time.)
Look for:
- The call timing. The call should arrive before Player A begins any pass motion. If Player A is mid-windup when the call arrives, the sequence is backward — deciding first, listening second. Watch for the pause: Player A with the ball, waiting, before the call comes.
- Call specificity. "Ball!" or "Me!" tells Player A where Player B is; "Here!" tells Player A what kind of pass to play; "Switch, right!" tells Player A both where and with which foot. The call quality ladder is: any sound → directional word → direction + foot.
- The first touch matching the call. If Player B called "Switch," their first touch should cross to the called side. A called direction the first touch ignores reveals a call made as a reflex rather than a commitment.
- Both feet across sets. At Level 2+, are both players calling both feet, or defaulting to the strong foot on every call? The foot call reveals the habit.
Cues to give:
- "Did you hear the call before you played?"
- "What did your call ask for? Did your first touch deliver it?"
- "How specific was that call? What else could you have told them?"
- "Did your feet match your call? Say which foot when you call."
Praise:
- "Call came before the pass motion — that's the sequence."
- "You heard 'switch' and played it there. That's the listening habit."
- "You called left foot and received on the left foot — the whole thing held."
- "You waited. You didn't rush. That wait is everything."
Don't fix yet:
- Pass weight and accuracy in the first two sessions — the loop is the priority.
- Which specific words are used. Any words that convey direction are valid; consistency within the pair matters more than standardisation.
- Slow call timing in early sessions. Early calls are always a little late; they sharpen through reps. Silence doesn't improve through correction.
Watch points
- Ball-carrier begins the pass motion as the call arrives — call and pass happening simultaneously rather than in sequence. Redirect: "Which came first — the call or the pass? Let's slow it down. Hold the ball until you've heard the full word." One conscious rep of deliberate waiting usually resets the sequence.
- The caller uses the same word every rep regardless of position — "Here!" always, whether positioned for a ground pass, a diagonal, or a through ball. Redirect: "You were to my left and running — what would 'Here' have given you? What else could you have said?" Ask them to name an alternative; they usually can.
- Player B's first touch does not match the foot declared in the call — "Switch, left!" followed by a right-foot first touch. Redirect: "What foot did you call? Did your touch deliver it?" The mismatch often reveals a reflexive foot call; ask them to call the weak foot deliberately on the next five reps.
- Both players default to the same-foot call every rep — always the same foot declared, always the same direction. Redirect: "Which call haven't you made yet today? Try that one next." Frames variety as curiosity, not correction.
- The pair completes the 5-pass set without ever swapping roles — one player settling into the caller role, the other into the ball-carrier role. Redirect: enforce the 5-pass swap rule explicitly. Both halves of the communication habit must receive equal time; role-locking defeats the drill's purpose.
