What the scoreboard leaves out about a young player

Every weekend, thousands of parents drive home from a game talking about the score.

That is natural: the game shows one scoreboard, and it is the only one anybody keeps. For a developing player, though, it tells a small part of the story. Goals and assists record what happened to be countable today. They say very little about whether a player is becoming better.

Here is what tends to build a player over the years, and almost nobody watches for it from the sideline:

How often the player looks away from the ball. Scanning, checking the shoulders before receiving, is one of the clearest habits separating players who make good decisions from players who make fast ones. It is trainable, it is visible from the sideline, and it never appears in a statistic.

What the first touch makes possible. Not whether the touch was clean, but whether it opened the next action: away from pressure, into space, towards the goal. A perfect touch into a dead end helps less than a scuffed one that escapes the press.

Decisions under real pressure. A player who attempts the right pass and fails is learning something the one who makes ten safe passes backward is not. If you only reward completions, you teach fear.

What happens away from training. Sleep, free play, other sports. The sessions are perhaps four hours a week; development runs all week. The environment around the player, built largely by parents, is training too, whether anyone calls it that or not.

None of this shows up on the scoreboard. All of it shows up later, in the years that actually matter.

That is the lens this newsletter looks through: the process indicators that build a footballer, and what players, parents and coaches can each do about them. Next issue: scanning, what it is, how to see it from the sideline, and one way to train it this week without any equipment at all.

If this way of thinking about development resonates, the drill library at stunprex.com/training is built entirely on it.
